2001 Archived PSAT/NMSQT Data

In the fall of 2001, students took the PSAT/NMSQT to help determine their level of readiness for college. The PSAT/NMSQT 2001 State Summary Reports summarize the characteristics, scores, and educational plans of the Class of 2003 and Class of 2004. In the 2001 academic year, the PSAT/NMSQT gave 2.4 million students, in more than 22,000 schools, comprehensive overviews of their skills in verbal reasoning, math reasoning, and writing—three academic areas important for college-level work. Each student received the newly designed Score Report Plus, which provides thorough, personalized feedback on student performance and identifies specific skills that need attention, along with suggestions for improvement. This individualized feedback can help improve student performance in the classroom, on the SAT®, and later in college-level work. In recognition of the growing number of 10th graders participating in the PSAT/NMSQT, this year's score reports included sophomore percentiles to help these students put their scores in the proper perspective.

Highlights of 2001 Junior Data

  • Males comprised 44.6% of junior test participants (up 0.1% from the prior year).
  • Of those noting racial/ethnic background, 29.4% of juniors indicated a category other than "white," an increase from 28.8% in 2000.
  • Junior average 2001 scores (with comparison to 2000 data):
    • Verbal: 48.3 (no change)
      The average female and male verbal score averages also remained the same as 2000.
    • Math: 49.0 (0.4 decrease)
      Female math averages decreased 0.2 from last year; the male average decreased by 0.6.
    • Writing Skills: 48.9 (0.2 increase)
      Both females and males increased writing skills averages by 0.2.
  • College majors of interest to the Class of 2003 include: health sciences and services, 15.4%; social/behavioral sciences and history, 10.4%; business and management, 9.7%; the arts, 9.2%; engineering, 8.4%; and education, 5.5%. The strongest interest among males was engineering (16.4%); females' most frequently indicated interest was health sciences and services (20.8%). About 13% were undecided about a college major.

Highlights of 2001 Sophomore Data

  • 54.4% of sophomores who took the PSAT/NMSQT were female.
  • Of those noting racial/ethnic background, 35.3% of sophomores indicated a category other than "white."
  • Sophomore average 2001 scores:
    • Verbal: 45.1
    • Math: 45.5
    • Writing Skills: 46.2
  • Careers of interest to the Class of 2004 include: health services/medical professions, 16.8%; the arts, 9.8%; social sciences/related professions, 9.7%. Approximately 16% indicated they were undecided about a career.
    • For those males who indicated a preference, the most frequent career choices were computer/information sciences and engineering (both at 10.7%), followed by health services/medical professions (9.6 %). Approximately 18% of males were undecided about a career.
    • The top career interests for females were health services/medical professions (22.6%), social sciences/related professions (12.5%), and the arts (11.2%). Some 15 percent of females indicated they were undecided about a career.
