2003 Archived PSAT/NMSQT Data

In the fall of 2003, students took the PSAT/NMSQT to help determine their level of readiness for college. The PSAT/NMSQT 2003 State Summary Reports summarize the characteristics, scores, and educational plans of the Class of 2005 and Class of 2006. In the 2003-2004 academic year, the PSAT/NMSQT gave 2.6 million students, in more than 22,000 schools, comprehensive overviews of their skills in verbal reasoning, math reasoning, and writing--three academic areas important for college-level work. Each student received Score Report Plus, which provides thorough, personalized feedback on student performance and identifies specific skills that need attention, along with suggestions for improvement. This individualized feedback can help improve student performance in the classroom, on the SAT®, and later in college-level work.

Highlights of 2003 Junior Data

  • Females comprised 55.1% of junior test participants (up 0.1% from the prior year).
  • Of those noting racial/ethnic background, 32.1% of juniors indicated a category other than "white," an increase from 30.6% in 2002.
  • Junior average scores for 2003 (with comparison to 2002 data):
    • Verbal: 47.2 (0.8 decrease)
    • Math: 48.1 (1.1 decrease)
    • Writing Skills: 49.8 (1.1 increase)
  • College majors of interest to the Class of 2005 include: health sciences and services, 17.0%; social/behavioral sciences and history, 9.8%; business and management, 9.5%; the arts, 9.1%; engineering, 8.2%; and education, 5.1%. The strongest interest among males was engineering (16.1%); females' most frequently indicated interest was health sciences and services (22.6%). About 13% were undecided about a college major.

Highlights of 2003 Sophomore Data

  • 46.0% of sophomores who took the PSAT/NMSQT were male (up 0.4% from the prior year).
  • Of those noting racial/ethnic background, 40.3% of sophomores indicated a category other than "white," an increase from 37.2% in 2002.
  • Sophomore average scores for 2003 (with comparison to 2002 data):
    • Verbal: 43.0 (1.4 decrease)
    • Math: 43.9 (1.6 decrease)
    • Writing Skills: 46.3 (0.4 increase)
  • College majors of interest to the Class of 2006 include: health sciences and services, 15.9%; the arts, 10.4%; social/behavioral sciences and history, 8.6%; engineering, 8.4%; and business and management, 7.5%. The strongest interest among males was engineering (16.3%); females' most frequently indicated interest was health sciences and services (21.7%). About 15% were undecided about a college major.
