AP International

Providing opportunities for students around the globe

The College Board is committed to providing opportunities for students outside the United States to take AP courses and examinations. To ensure that AP Program standards are met and that as many qualified students as possible can benefit from the Program:

  • The AP International Services team and their Washington International Education colleagues work closely with the Office of Overseas Schools at the U.S. Department of State.
  • Regional educational officers at the State Department are in regular contact with the College Board and the AP Program and with the international regional education associations.

AP Program recognition

Over 600 universities in more than 55 countries outside the United States recognize AP for credit, advanced placement and/or in the admissions process. Individual colleges and universities, not the College Board or the AP Program, set criteria for AP policies and for granting admission to their respective programs. AP Exam performance is typically considered within the student's complete application.

For more information, visit AP International Recognition.

Professional development

The College Board conducts AP weekend workshops and AP Summer Institutes for international teachers worldwide. Additionally, AP Institutes targeted for international teachers have been held in Hawaii at the Punahou School, in Texas at Rice University, and in Connecticut at the Taft Educational Center.

For information about scheduled AP Summer Institutes, see Professional Development for International Teachers.

The Advanced Placement International Diploma

The Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID) is designed for students whose higher education plans include applying to a university outside the United States. It is accepted by universities worldwide as an indication of a student's readiness for postsecondary work. It is not, however, used for credit or advanced placement in universities outside the United States, and is also not a substitute for a secondary school diploma.

To earn the International Diploma, students must earn grades of 3 or higher on five or more AP Exams within at least three of the five content areas below:

  • Languages
  • Mathematics and Sciences
  • History and Social Sciences
  • Global Perspectives
  • Arts

To learn more about each of these content areas and the courses they include, visit the Advanced Placement International Diploma page.
