Chinese Guest Teacher and Trainee Program

The Chinese Guest Teacher and Trainee Program is designed to help U.S. schools develop Chinese language and culture study programs and to promote international exchange between the United States and China. Made possible through a collaboration between the College Board and Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the program serves hundreds of K-12 schools and districts and reaches tens of thousands of U.S. students.

Applications for the 2012-13 school year are now being accepted. See below.

The Program provides U.S. schools with two hosting options:

Launch or Expand your Chinese Program: Host a Teacher

In the last five years, the College Board has brought nearly 600 experienced Chinese teachers to classrooms across the nation, establishing the largest Chinese visiting teacher program in the U.S.

This program provides an experienced language teacher from China to work full-time in the host school or district for a period of one to three years. The guest teachers have at least three years of teaching experience and go through a rigorous selection and training process. Participating institutions are responsible for providing a partial salary to the guest teacher, which is subsidized by a stipend from Hanban.

Key benefits of hosting a guest teacher for schools and students include:

  • Host schools can start or expand a Chinese language and culture program at a reasonable cost.
  • Students learn authentic Chinese language and interact with a native Chinese instructor.
  • Schools can lay a foundation for offering AP® Chinese classes in the future.
  • Chinese guest teachers can assist in curriculum development, program expansion, and partnership creation.

For more information on hosting a guest teacher, see our Guest Teacher FAQs.

Enrich your Chinese Program: Host a Trainee

New in 2012 is the opportunity to host a Chinese guest trainee, in which established K-12 Chinese programs gain an authentic Chinese language and cultural resource to enrich their school’s classrooms and communities.

This program places a trainee from a TCFL (Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language) post-graduate program in China to the host school or district for one year. The guest trainees have one year of teaching experience; however, they cannot serve as teachers of record nor fixed co-teachers. Participating institutions are responsible for providing guest trainees with a structured training plan, and complimentary housing and transportation.

Key benefits of hosting a guest trainee for schools and students include:

  • Schools enhance their Chinese language programs with assistance from a native Chinese speaker, who can support Chinese classrooms, expand after-school and extracurricular Chinese offerings, and conduct cultural activities to foster interest among students and the larger community.
  • Students gain a valuable opportunity to interact and practice their language skills with a native Chinese speaker.
  • The guest trainee can serve as a cultural resource in Chinese classes and in other subjects.
  • Host institutions can strengthen a pipeline of students to enroll in AP® Chinese classes in the future.

For more information on hosting a guest trainee, see our Guest Trainee FAQs.

This is your chance to bring an innovative international program into your school and community, and build your Chinese offerings efficiently and affordably.

From Participating Schools

"The College Board Chinese Guest Teacher Program is an incredible opportunity for providing Mandarin Chinese instruction and learning about the culture of China. The quality of our guest teachers has been first-rate and the program has greatly enhanced our international education efforts."
James J. Paces, Shaker Heights City School District (Shaker Heights, OH)

"The Gunnery has reaped many benefits from its participation in the College Board Chinese Guest Teacher Program. It allowed us the chance, as a small school, to build a powerful Mandarin curriculum that takes talented beginners all the way to the AP® level in four years. Mr. Wu is so charismatic and open to new people and experiences that I think it is safe to say that he is probably one of the few faculty members that the entire student body knows within the first few weeks of school."
Eileen Kelly-Aguirre, The Gunnery (Washington, CT)

"I could not be more pleased with the College Board Chinese Guest Teacher Program. Our teacher has been excellent and has given our students an amazing start to their immersion education. She is pleasant to work with and our students, teachers, parents and community value her work. She is one of the best teachers I have worked with. What a wonderful opportunity we have been able to provide to our students!"
Vonzaa Hewitt, Stewart Elementary (Centerville, UT)
