In this session, school counselors will learn about the sensitivity necessary to effectively engage diverse parent, family and community populations in the college and career readiness process. School counselors will gain the knowledge and skills needed to develop and deliver innovative and non-traditional college and career readiness interventions and strategies for parent, family and community partners.

  • Identify and assess parent/family related data for targeting college and career readiness outreach efforts.
  • Assess the structure and make-up of today's students, families and communities
  • Develop innovative and non-traditional interventions and strategies to engage diverse parent/family groups

The school counselor will learn to use the Eight Components publication as a tool to promote college and career readiness.

Leadership in Increasing and Supporting AP Participation and Success for Underserved Populations

This session will provide school counselors with the skills and knowledge necessary for promoting equitable participation and performance of underrepresented student groups in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program. Through easy to use tools, school counselors will learn to examine participants' capacity to examine AP data, and apply problem-solving strategies to generate best practice interventions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine and debunk AP beliefs that thwart underserved populations aspirations for participation in AP.
  • Examine and analyze data relevant to student AP participation and performance for underserved populations.
  • Apply problem solving skills to generate best practice interventions to close achievement gaps and inequities in AP participation and performance.
