A Dream Deferred: The Future of African-American Education

April 24–25, 2008
Westin Los Angeles Airport
Los Angeles, California

Far too many African-American students lack the preparation and rigor to succeed in high school. Thus many African-American students drop-out of high school at alarming rates and never enter the college pipeline. Those that make it to college campuses often lag behind their peers in graduation rate. We are facing a major educational crisis. More than 50 years after the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, African-American achievement gaps continue for students throughout the K–16 system. The College Board is proud to host a two-day, solutions-driven conference devoted to bringing together educational and community leaders to discuss and explore models of excellence.

Don't miss this important dialogue on the educational future of African-American students. This gathering will provide you with proven strategies, innovative tools, and insightful data.

Native American Student Advocacy Institute

Keeping the Fire Burning: Ensuring Postsecondary Access and Excellence for Native American Students
May 20-21, 2008
Diné College
Tsaile, Arizona

The Institute celebrates individual triumphs over educational inequities, and provides opportunities for future successful partnerships that can ensure postsecondary access and excellence for Native American students.  We will highlight promising practices that use research and data to successfully address the challenges American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students encounter when pursuing postsecondary education.  In particular, we hope to examine the following areas:

  • Models for indigenous education that promote critical thinking and reasoning
  • Recruitment admissions, and retention strategies
  • Converting effective practices into educational policy
  • Outreach efforts to promote family and/or community involvement in the college process

28th Annual Summer Institute On College Admissions and School Relations

July 27-31, 2008
University of San Diego
San Diego, California

The Summer Institute is specifically designed to help train newly hired professional staff in admissions and outreach offices. Participants from four-year public and private colleges and universities gain firsthand knowledge of the higher education landscape, tips on outreach and recruitment strategies, and approaches to admissions and financial aid, as well as an understanding of the effect of their work on institutions and students. We examine many of the important topics enrollment offices encounter, including:

  • Implications of changing demographics
  • Aspects of diversity
  • Role of financial aid in enrollment management
  • Importance of ethical standards and practices
  • Appropriate use of standardized tests
