Pre-AP Strategies in Mathematics: Using Technology to Understand Systems of Linear Equations

Workshop description

Technology can greatly enhance students' understanding of linear functions. This workshop demonstrates how TI-Nspire technology from Texas Instruments can be used to help correct students' misconceptions regarding linear equations and build a deeper understanding of the mathematical concepts shown by research to be toughest for students to grasp. Participants will experience firsthand how TI-Nspire graphing calculators and software can develop students' conceptual understanding and help them see connections among the graphical, symbolic and tabular representations of functions.

Workshop goal

Participants will learn technology-based strategies for teaching students linear functions and their graphical, symbolic and tabular representations.

Learning outcomes

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Effectively use technology to help identify and correct students' misconceptions related to topics in systems of linear equations
  • Implement technology to help clarify students' thinking regarding systems of equations and their solution(s)
  • Use components of the TI-Nspire learning resources to develop targeted strategies that engage students in understanding and solving linear equations
  • Recognize the impact of equity and access on students' math preparation at the Pre-AP® level and identify ways to support all students as they develop algebraic thinking
