AP German Language and Culture

For new and experienced AP teachers

Workshop description

This workshop will give participants concrete strategies for designing and implementing an effective AP German Language and Culture curriculum. Drawing from the Curriculum Framework, participants will learn how to develop activities and assessments that present language in cultural context, appropriately build students' proficiencies in the modes of communication as defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and integrate "authentic materials" into language instruction. Additionally, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the exam structure and receive practical advice on how to prepare for a course audit.

Workshop materials

Each participant will receive a copy of the Workshop Handbook, which contains:

  • AP German Language and Culture Course and Exam Description
  • AP Course Audit information
  • Sample syllabus for AP German Language and Culture and a Syllabus Development Guide
  • AP German Language and Culture Practice Exam

Curriculum module: Schönheit und Ästhetik

This curriculum module provides a possible treatment of Schönheit und Ästhetik, one of the six themes of the AP German Language and Culture curriculum. The curriculum module is designed so that students can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of content across disciplines; demonstrate an understanding of social, historical and/or geographic features of the target language; engage in spoken and written interpersonal communication; synthesize information from a variety of authentic written and print resources; and successfully plan, produce and present spoken and written presentational communications. Chapters include:

  • Concepts of Beauty
  • Final Module Project

Note: Curriculum module materials reflect important topics in AP courses, and the materials are meant to provide teachers with resources and classroom ideas. However, curriculum module materials should not be taken as an indication that a particular topic will appear on the AP Exam.
