Understanding CLEP scoring

Students receive their scores onscreen immediately after completing their exams. Test administrators should print out a copy of the score report and provide it to students before they leave the test center. Score reports show the total scaled score for an exam, which falls between 20 and 80. Learn more about how exams are scored.

If a student has taken English Composition with Essay, the combined score will be mailed after the essay has been scored—usually two to three weeks after the test date. See the scoring dates for English Composition with Essay.

Comparing scores

CLEP exams are developed and evaluated independently and are not linked to each other except by the program's common purpose, format, and method of reporting results. For this reason, direct comparisons should not be made from one CLEP exam to another. Nor are CLEP scores comparable to SAT scores or scores of other tests that use similar scales.

Sending score reports

If students want to send their scores to a college, employer, or certifying agency, they are given the opportunity to select this option in the examination software on the day of the exam. This service is free of charge only if students select their score recipients at the time of testing.

Canceling scores

If students don't want their scores reported to the institution they have selected, they are given the option to cancel their scores in the testing software. They will be asked to verify this decision several times before the score is canceled. Scores cannot be canceled once students have seen their instant score reports. Canceled scores cannot be reinstated, and canceled exams cannot be taken again for six months. Learn more about CLEP's retest policy.

Obtaining CLEP transcripts

If a student does not indicate a score recipient institution at the time of testing, he or she can request scores by ordering a CLEP transcript for a $20 fee. The transcript is a cumulative score report of all the CLEP exams a student has taken and the scores he or she has earned in the last 20 years. A student may request that particular scores be suppressed from the transcript.

To obtain a CLEP transcript, a student must:

  1. Download the Transcript Request Form (.pdf/43K)
  2. Provide his or her name (at testing time), date of birth, social security number, exam title(s), test date, testing location/center, and the institution to which scores should be sent.
  3. Mail the completed form with a check to CLEP at the address on the form, or call (800) 257-9558 if ordering with a credit card.

Obtaining transcripts for military personnel

A military transcript will include all scores for paper-based CLEP exams taken by service members at DANTES military test centers (after July 1, 1974) and CLEP computer-based exams (taken after January 1, 2004).

To obtain a CLEP transcript, military personnel must:

  • 1. Download the Military Transcript Order Form (.doc/68K).
  • 2. Mail the completed form to the address on the form, along with a certified check or money order of $20 for each transcript requested, payable to Prometric. Credit card payment is accepted.
