Standby Testing
How to help standby students on SAT® test day
If a student misses the late registration deadline, he or she may be able to take the SAT as a standby. Students must pay a standby fee in addition to the regular test fee.
Test day instructions for standbys
There is no guarantee that a standby student is admitted to the test. Test centers admit standbys:
- In the order of their arrival (standbys should arrive no later than 7:45 a.m. on test day)
- Only if they have enough space, testing materials, and staff
- Only after preregistered test-takers have been admitted.
- Only if they have acceptable ID
How to register as a standby
Remind students to:
- Fill out the Registration Form completely
- Fill in the oval for the Standby Fee; otherwise, the student's scores will be delayed
- Include payment for the test fee, plus the additional standby fee:
- Payment must be a check, money order, or credit card. Cash is not accepted.
- Checks and money orders should be made payable to "The College Board."
- Seal the completed form and payment together in the envelope
- Place the appropriate label showing the test month on the envelope
- Bring the envelope to the test center and give it to the supervisor
Students with SSD accommodations
The only SSD accommodation offered on a standby basis is 50 percent extended time. The student must bring a copy of his Eligibility Approval Letter to the test and present it with a Registration Form and fees.
Standby exclusions
Students testing in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, or Togo cannot test as standbys.
Adult test-takers (21 years or more on test day) cannot test as standbys.
Fee waivers cannot be used for testing standby.
