Institutions Using Subject Tests
Using SAT Subject Tests for admissions and placement
Approximately 160 institutions require or recommend SAT Subject Test scores for admissions and placement of incoming students. The tests are a trusted and reliable assessment of students' knowledge and college readiness.
Subject Tests are particularly useful:
- In combination with the SAT Reasoning Test—to add validity to predicting student success
- To strengthen retention and minimize additional student testing after acceptance
- To determine course placement—Subject Tests can replace locally administered assessments and ensure that students are placed in courses in which they are most likely to succeed
Many institutions either require or recommend taking Subject Tests
Your students can review college catalogs, college search engines, or college handbooks to find out if the institutions require scores for admissions and, if so, how many tests and in which subjects.
Should students take Subject Tests even if they are not required?
Even if they are not required, many colleges still consider Subject Test scores in the admissions process. By taking the tests, students can show their:
- Thorough knowledge of a certain subject
- Academic interest
- Determination to succeed
Taking Subject Tests can also help students while they are in high school. A student scoring well on a particular Subject Test may wish to take an honors or AP course in that subject.
